Zelenskyy Warns Ukraine’s Survival at Risk Without US Support as Trump Pushes for Peace Talks

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has warned that his country has little chance of surviving Russia’s ongoing assault without continued support from the United States. His remarks come as U.S. President Donald Trump announced that negotiations to end the war will begin following a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“Probably it will be very, very, very difficult. And of course, in all difficult situations, there is a chance. But we will have a low chance—low chance to survive without the support of the United States,” Zelenskyy said in an interview with NBC News. He added, “I don’t want to think that we will not be strategic partners,” emphasizing the importance of continued U.S.-Ukraine relations.

Putin’s True Intentions & Ukraine’s Security Concerns

Zelenskyy accused Putin of seeking not a genuine end to the war but only a temporary ceasefire to lift sanctions and allow Russia’s military to regroup. He also expressed fears that without U.S. military aid, Ukraine would be significantly weakened and more vulnerable to Russian attacks.

Trump’s Diplomatic Shift

Trump’s announcement of discussions with both Putin and Zelenskyy has surprised U.S. allies, signaling a potential shift in American foreign policy. He indicated he would likely meet with Putin soon to begin truce talks, a move that could reshape the trajectory of the conflict.

Additionally, Trump stated that Ukraine’s NATO membership was unlikely and suggested that Kyiv might not be able to reclaim all its lost territory. Ukraine has insisted that Russia must withdraw from occupied areas and that it needs NATO membership or equivalent security guarantees to prevent future aggression from Moscow.

Zelenskyy’s Urgent Diplomatic Push

At the Munich Security Conference on Friday, Zelenskyy met with U.S. Vice President JD Vance as part of his urgent efforts to ensure Ukraine remains a priority in Washington amid its push to conclude the war. “We want peace very much, but we need real security guarantees,” he stated after the meeting. He later posted on X that a U.S. envoy would soon visit Kyiv.

Vance described the talks with Zelenskyy as “good conversations” and acknowledged that the U.S. aims to secure a lasting peace. “We want to achieve a durable, lasting peace—not one that will leave Eastern Europe in conflict just a couple of years down the road,” he said.

European Allies Demand a Seat at the Table

European nations, who alongside the U.S. have been Ukraine’s strongest backers, are insisting they be included in any peace negotiations that will impact the security of their continent.

Currently, Russia controls about 20% of Ukraine, having launched its full-scale invasion in 2022 under the claim that Kyiv’s NATO ambitions posed an existential threat. Ukraine and Western allies dismiss this as an imperialist land grab and continue to push for Moscow’s complete withdrawal.
